To a Poor Old Woman - Mar. 1

To a Poor Old Woman

by William Carlos Williams

munching a plum on
the street a paper bag
of them in her hand

They taste good to her
They taste good
to her. They taste
good to her

You can see it by
the way she gives herself
to the one half
sucked out in her hand

Comforted
a solace of ripe plums
seeming to fill the air
They taste good to her

  1. Part 1:
The speaker of this poem uses third person to address the girl eating plums, "They taste good to her" (Williams). The setting of this poem appears to be on a street corner. The author uses imagery to help with the setting. " ...on
the street a paper bag of them in her hand (Williams). This helps show exactly what is happening when the speaker sees this.
    Part 2:
"To a Poor Old Woman" by William Carlos Williams, is a short poem about an old woman walking down the street eating plums. The main idea of this poem seems to be that plums taste good. In the second and fourth stanzas there is a repeated line that says "They taste good to her" (Williams), this shows that the speaker notices that the plums must taste good. As well as in the third stanza the line "You can see it by the way she gives herself to the one half sucked out in her hand" (Williams), this is another example that shows that the speaker thinks plums are tasty. The mood of the poem can be seen as carefree. This old woman seems to not have a care in the world. She is just minding her own business eating her plums. The tone is calm because the speaker is talking about a nice old lady who doesn't have a care in the world. Based off her actions she doesn't have to worry about anything. The theme of the poem is that simple pleasures in life are enjoyable. In the poem the simple pleasures can be represented s the plums. They are such a simple thing to have but the old women seems to really enjoy them as seen in the second stanza "They taste good to her They taste good to her. They taste good to her" (Williams). The theme may be hard to understand because its not as noticeable as the mood or tone.
    Part 3:
I didn't enjoy this poem it was strangely worded and it was confusing to read. For example in the second stanza Williams restates the same kine three times. This was odd because it didn't add anything to the poem such as setting or any description of the what was going on. In your opinion what does this poem represent in life.
