The Changing Light - Mar. 14

The Changing Light

by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The changing light
                 at San Francisco
is none of your East Coast light
                none of your
                            pearly light of Paris
The light of San Francisco
                        is a sea light
                                       an island light
And the light of fog
                   blanketing the hills
          drifting in at night
                      through the Golden Gate
to lie on the city at dawn
And then the halcyon late mornings
       after the fog burns off
and the sun paints white houses
with the sea light of Greece
                 with sharp clean shadows
                       making the town look like
                                it had just been painted

But the wind comes up at four o'clock
                                     sweeping the hills

And then the veil of light of early evening

And then another scrim
                  when the new night fog
                                        floats in
And in that vale of light
                      the city drifts
                                    anchorless upon the ocean

  1. James c ,Response- Part 1-The Changing Light-In the Poem The Changing light by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, The speaker of the poem is the author himself describing the changing lights in San Francisco. The speaker is addressing the changing lights in San Francisco and then all over the world. The setting takes place at San Francisco along the bay of it like when the poem says “The light of San Francisco is a sea light an island light and the light of fog blanketing the hills drifting in at night” so it starts from the outer part and drifts the light into the city and the different lights around the world. One on the literary devices used in this poem shows in the stanza “The light of San Francisco is a sea light an island light and the light of fog” this shows an example of a metaphor using the expression the light of San Francisco is a sea light.
Part 2 -This poem is called The Changing light by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, The main point of this poem is to see the real beauty and such of places that can be hidden by other things. The mood is best described as a more melo mood as expressed in the line “But the wind comes up at four o'clock sweeping the hills And then the veil of light of early evening And then another scrim when the new night fog floats in and in that vale of light the city drifts anchorless upon the ocean” it’s very calm and mysterious. What best describes the tone of the poem would most likely be calm tone and down to earth because it doesn’t really portray an angry of exciting tone to it. But all of these main points f the poem tie up into the overall theme and that is that it is different all over the world and the author portrays it through the city of San Francisco because that’s where he grew up.
Part3 –My overall opinion of this poem is that I liked it and I thought I really understood it in a way where now a see how it is different everywhere and the different places where the lights change. It makes me feels this way on the imagery he said in the poem and really helped me see what he was explaining like when the poem says “And the light of fog blanketing the hills drifting in at night through the Golden Gate”. So how is it where you live with “The Changing Light” in your city or town?
